Support and Friends
Support from other
people and information can help women deal with menopause. In our grandmothers' time,
women didn't talk about menopause. But today, we
have more information
about it and we can talk about it with others.
Support groups
can help women as they go through this life
change. As a woman with a disability, you may find this is a good time to
get involved in a support group. Talking to others who are dealing with the
same issues may help you deal with your emotional,
mental, health, spiritual, social, and
physical needs.
A sense of humor
can be helpful for you in dealing with a
body that may seem out of control. A meeting with a
group of friends may provide a safe
place to talk about changes that may seem embarrassing-- and
maybe you can laugh together.
Men also have mid-life changes.
Some of their symptoms may include inability to
have or maintain an erection of the penis,
a lower interest in sex, depression,
a decreased sense of
well being, and loss of muscle.
Men's changes occur more slowly
than women's and may occur a
few years later. Women with disabilities should
talk to their partners about
changes they are both having. For example, if
a partner has less interest in sex,
the woman may feel he is not interested in her. It helps
for couples to talk to one another about the
changes that are occurring.
