34th Annual Distinguished Lecture in Nursing
Join
the College of Nursing on November 13th for “Framing
the Future of Nursing in Higher Education: Urgency for
Action” at 7:30 p.m. in the Villanova Room of
Connelly Center. We are delighted to welcome to campus
Distinguished Lecturer Michael R. Bleich, PhD, RN,
NEA-BC, FAAN, Maxine Clark and Bob Fox Dean and
Professor, Goldfarb School of Nursing, Barnes Jewish
College; Vice President, BJC Healthcare, St. Louis. Dr.
Bleich was on the committee for the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the
Institute of Medicine (IOM) that produced the
groundbreaking report "The Future of Nursing: Leading
Change, Advancing Health" (2010). The report calls upon
nurses to take a greater leadership role in our
increasingly complex health care system.

Dr.
Elizabeth Dowdell inducted into Academy
The most outstanding contribution to nursing of
Dr. Elizabeth Dowdell, recently named a fellow
of the American Academy of Nursing, is
quantifying the health risks facing vulnerable
children and providing leadership to vital,
compelling issues in child health. Her sustained
program of research has resulted in
contributions to nursing, healthcare, law
enforcement and policy, nationally and
internationally.

In Jeff's words
A case study came to life on September 20 when
former patient Jeff Leighton shared his story of
the long road to gain independence after a
severe head trauma. Second degree students were
moved by his unforgettable talk.

Learning the rewards of
research
Honors student Aurora Vandewark has nurtured her
interest in maternal-child health for more than
two years. This junior's latest scholarly
endeavor involved researching lactation
knowledge among nursing students. She looks
forward to becoming a midwife and earning her
PhD.

Saving teen lives
Originally planning to attend medical school,
Joseph Dovidio had an "ah-ha" moment and turned
to nursing. He has focused research activity on
preventing accidental deaths among texting teen
drivers, no surprise from a student who aspires
to work in critical care/trauma one day.

Critical care air
transport
As part
of its Joining Forces initiative, the College of
Nursing recently welcomed speaker Air Force
Capt. Elizabeth Hoettels MSN, CCRN from
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. She
shared the inspiring story of her career and
work caring for critically injured military in
the air between Afghanistan and Germany.
