As we enter the Christmas season, excitement continues for our 60th Anniversary
conference on April 6th “Partners in advancing
global health: educating the next generation.”
Internationally known keynote speakers will be Dr. Louis
Hugo Francescutti, Professor, Department of Public
Health Sciences, University of Alberta, and President of
the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada;
and Dr. Naeema Al-Gasseer, World Health Organization
Representative for Egypt.

Save the date!
Alumni, be sure to
be part of Reunion 2013 (June 6-9)! Note there will be
special events in recognition of the 10 year anniversary
of our second degree accelerated program on Saturday,
June 8. We hope to see all of our "BSNExpress" graduates
there. Watch for communication from the Villanova
University Alumni Association in December about online
housing registration and in January about event
registration.
Nursing care during Hurricane Sandy
As Hurricane Sandy devastated large areas of the
country, Villanova Nurses were caring for those who were
affected. If you are one of those nurses, please email
ann.mckenzie@villanova.edu as we are compiling the
efforts of those involved.

PhD and DNP
program deadlines
Reminder: If you or a colleague are applying to
either our PhD in Nursing or our Doctor of
Nursing Practice (DNP) Program, applications are
due January 15, 2013. All elements, such as
transcripts and interviews, are due by this
date. We look forward to seeing your
application!

"People helping people"
“There isn't a day in my life that I am not
thankful for my Villanova experience,” notes Dr.
Thomas Treacy, a member of the College's Board
of Consultors. He and his wife Diane are a
Villanova alumni couple with a long history of
commitment to their community and serving
others. Through planned giving, they are helping
to support the work of the Center for Global and
Public Health because of its profound impact on
students and those they help around the world.

Urgency for action for the future of nursing
Michael R. Bleich, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, the
College's 34th Annual Distinguished Lecturer,
brings a unique and energetic perspective to the
discussion of nursing and nursing education in
the future. He was the only dean to sit on the
committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the
Institute of Medicine that produced the
groundbreaking report The Future of Nursing:
Leading Change, Advancing Health. The report
calls upon nurses to take a greater leadership
role in our increasingly complex health care
system.

Day of Service
The St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service
brings together thousands of students, faculty,
staff, alumni and their families each year to
team up with local agencies to provide service
throughout the Philadelphia region. The College
of Nursing contributed in many ways.

Human trafficking in southeastern Pennsylvania
The College of Nursing, in conjunction with the
School of Law and College of Liberal Arts &
Sciences, offers a compelling new
interdisciplinary course on human trafficking.
In October, the class welcomed two local FBI
agents who discussed human trafficking in
southeastern Pennsylvania: Prostituted Teen
Victims in the Criminal Justice System.

Uncovering common links
After
working with the nursing students in rural,
mobile healthcare clinics in the Dominican
Republic, business major Lupe Mata exclaimed he
“loves nurses.” Assistant Professor Tamara Kear,
PhD, RN, CNN who guided the nursing students
notes it was an excellent opportunity for
students from various majors to learn more about
other disciplines.
